Water Motor

The camera of Babette Mangolte, whose short film with the dancer Trisha Brown WATER MOTOR will be screened on 26 March and will also be available for streaming at arsenal 3, scans the bodies of the dancers as if to memorize patterns of movement.

  • Director

    Yvonne Rainer

  • USA / 1972
    90 min. / DCP / Original version

Lives of Performers

Rainer's first feature film begins with a rehearsal. In a series of tableaux, a love triangle develops, the story is told from off-screen and through fragments of text. "Her first film, says Heinz Emigholz, shows the seam between her work as a choreographer and the so very different work of stacking time containers against the transience of dance. She is not interested in the lives of the performers as real people, but in the nuance of how they live in the stereotypes of their roles. 'Archetypecasting' is what Rainer called this shift of attention to the simplified emotional constellations inherent in melodrama and soaps."
